Short answer
Facebook Dating has its own inbox. Open the Facebook app, tap Menu, tap Dating, then Matches. Tap a match to chat. You can only message people you have matched with, and those chats never appear in Messenger or on your Facebook profile.
People search for a “Facebook Dating Messenger app”, and there isn’t one. Dating messages live inside the Dating section of the Facebook app, walled off from Messenger on purpose so your friends never stumble into them. Here is how to get a conversation started with local singles, what the chat can and cannot do, and how to keep it safe.
How to message someone on Facebook Dating
- Open the Facebook app, tap Menu, then Dating.
- Browse Suggestions. To start a conversation, tap a specific photo or prompt answer and like with a comment. Your note is delivered with the like.
- If they like you back, you match. Open Matches at the top of Dating to see everyone you can chat with.
- Tap a match and type. Messages are instant, and both of you get notifications inside the Facebook app.
A plain heart with no comment also works, but the other person then has to start the chat. Liking with a comment gets you a reply far more often.

Where Dating messages live (and where they don’t)
- Inside Dating only. Chats are not in Messenger, not on your profile, and not visible to friends.
- Matches only. You cannot message someone who has not matched with you. Your first note travels with your like instead.
- Calls in the chat. Once matched, look for the call icon in the chat screen to make an audio or video call inside the app. It is the easiest way to confirm someone is who their photos say before meeting.
- Unmatch ends it. Either person can unmatch from the chat menu. The conversation disappears for both of you.
Find local singles to message
Dating already sorts suggestions by distance, so most of the people you see are nearby. To make it stricter, open Preferences from your profile picture and lower Distance. For more on that, see single women near me on Facebook Dating and how to find local singles near you.
Two things bring more local matches to your inbox:
- Groups and events. Dating can suggest people from the Facebook groups you are in and the events you have said you are going to. Real local groups are worth joining for this alone.
- Meet Cute. In the US and Canada, Dating can pair you with one surprise match a week. You get a chat straight away, and you can opt out any time.
Messages that get a reply
- Say something specific from their profile: a photo location, a prompt answer, a shared group.
- Ask one easy question. Two or three questions in a row feel like a form.
- Keep it short. Three lines is plenty for an opener.
- Reply within a day while the match is fresh.
- Suggest a short, public first meeting once the chat has a bit of rhythm.

Keep Dating chats safe
- Stay in Dating until you have met, or at least done a video call. Anyone rushing you to WhatsApp or Telegram in the first messages is a warning sign.
- Never send money, gift cards, crypto or “verification” fees. There is no legitimate reason for it.
- Do not share your address, workplace or daily routine early.
- Meet in public, in daylight, and tell a friend. Get to and from the date on your own.
- Use Report or Block from the chat menu if anything feels off. Reporting is anonymous.
Troubleshooting
- No Matches tab or no Dating at all. Facebook Dating is only in the phone app and only in some countries. There is no way to enable it elsewhere.
- Messages not sending. Check the person is still in Matches; if they unmatched, the chat is gone. Update the Facebook app and check your connection.
- No notifications. On your phone, allow notifications for Facebook, then in Facebook go to Settings and search “Dating” to check Dating notifications are on.
- Someone claims to be “Facebook Dating support”. Meta never messages you through a match. Report and block.
Common questions
Can I message someone on Facebook Dating without matching?
Not directly. You can send one message with your like by tapping a photo or answer and liking with a comment. A full chat opens only after you match.
Do Facebook Dating messages show up in Messenger?
No. They stay in the Dating section of the Facebook app. Nothing from Dating appears in Messenger, on your profile, or to your friends.
Can I video chat on Facebook Dating?
Yes, with a match, from inside the chat. If you do not see the call icon, update the app; the feature rolls out by region.
