1. Set a real distance on Facebook Dating

1. Open the Facebook app, tap Menu, then Dating (under See more if hidden).
2. Tap your profile picture and open Preferences.
3. Set Distance. Ten to twenty-five miles works for most cities; the cap is about 100 km. In a small town, go wider and accept some driving.
4. Set Gender and Age range, then go back to Suggestions.

Make sure Facebook has location permission on your phone (While using the app). Without it, Dating uses the city on your profile, which may be out of date.

2. Let groups and events do the matching

This is the part Facebook Dating does that other apps can’t. It can suggest people who are in the same Facebook groups as you, or going to the same events. Join two or three real local groups (a hiking club, a food page for your area, your neighbourhood) and RSVP to a couple of events. Your suggestions get more local and more relevant, and you have an instant opener: “I saw you’re in the Sunday run group too.”

3. Make your profile obviously local

• Use a photo at a place locals recognise: a park, a market, the waterfront.
• Answer a prompt with a real local spot: “Best coffee: the place under the bridge.”
• Say what you want. “Looking for something real, nearby” filters out the tourists and the pen-pals.

Every big app has a distance setting, and most people leave it on the default.

Set them all to the same honest radius. Different apps have different people, and it costs nothing to run two.

5. Take it offline, early and safely

Local dating’s whole advantage is that you can meet quickly. After a few good exchanges, suggest a short first meeting: coffee, a walk, a market.
